There are wonderful online adoption forums available for people who are considering adoption as a way to build their family, for those in the process of adopting and for adoptive parents at various stages of raising their children.
Adoption forums are web communities where people share information, stories, questions and answers and more with other people. Adoption forums have everyone from experts to novices participating in them. They are a good way to be connected to others that are interested and supportive of adoption. In addition, they can be a great resource for answering adoption-related questions. There are several options for people interested in joining an online forum.
1. Many adoption agencies offer a forum as a support service for their adoptive parents. These forums are often separated by country and interest. For example, an agency that has open adoption programs in Ethiopia, China, and Thailand may have three separate adoption forums for parents and prospective parents in each of these countries. They may, in addition to this, have a forum for people considering adoption. Check with your adoption agency to determine if they offer and monitor an adoption forum. If they do not, perhaps, they can recommend a good forum.
2. Adoption forums can be found through joining Yahoo Groups. This is a free service. In the ‘search for groups’ bar, typing in the word adoption brings up almost 5000 adoption forums ranging in topic and interest. www.groups.yahoo.com
It is very important to join a group that has a strict guidelines and expectations on the conduct of group members. In addition, the group should be monitored and kept to a high ethical standard of discussion. Good adoption forums are honest, encouraging, and information filled communities with a mixture of prospective adoptive parents, adoptive parents, and adoption experts.
