Parent Requirements:
Parents must be at least 25 years old when adopting a child from Liberia, Africa. Liberia accepts both married couples and single women. Liberia does not limit family size for prospective adoptive parents and welcomes larger families to adopt a Liberian child.

Travel Requirements:
At this time many parts of Liberia are unsafe to live in and to travel to. Travel is not required for adoptive parents and many adoption agencies that work in Liberia recommended that an escort be used. However, parents desiring to travel may be permitted to do so.

Timeline: There are Liberian children available immediately for adoption. From the time of dossier submission to the child arrives home is estimated 6 months to 1 year.

Hague Convention Status: Liberia has not signed the Hague Convention on International Adoption. Prospective parents may pursue adopting a child from Liberia and will not have this delayed due to the Hague as long as the 1-600 or 1-600A is completed prior to implementation.

One of the most deadly and devastating civil wars in the history of Africa broke out in Liberia in 1989. This war has left not only continued violence throughout the country, but created an entire population of suffering people. At this time in Liberia there is no electricity, running water, or mail service. Health care is basically non-existent and the life expectancy is an estimated 42 years. Only 10% of the population is employed in Liberia leaving little opportunity for orphans who are not adopted. The people of Liberia have been described as having “extraordinary spirits” for the resiliency and love they continue to demonstrate through the hardships.
