According to the U.S. Department of State there have not been any immigrant visas issues for Nigerian children being adopted from Nigeria into the U.S. in the last seven years.
Adoptions from Nigeria, however, are possible. There are no known adoption agencies working in Nigeria. As a results, adoptions are completed independently and with the assistance of an attorney.
Parent Requirements:
Parents may not have any other children
Parents must be married for a minimum of 10 years
At least one of the two spouses must be 35 years of age or older
Time Frame: The estimated time frame is 6 months to a year to complete an adoption in Nigeria.
Children Available: There are many children residing in orphanages in Nigeria of all ages. Once a child is identified the adoptive family can provide a Nigerian foster home for the child until the adoption is completed. If this does not occur, the child remains in the orphanage until the adoption is complete.
The U.S. Department of State has a list of all documents that the Nigerian Government requires. These may be viewed by going to their website.
