Sierra Leone is open to US adoptions once more! The process may take a while and go through several check points, but this is a good things as it is accountability to make sure the child being adopted is actually in need of a home.

Children available: Many children in Sierra Leone have been orphaned by years of civil war. There are boys and girl, primarily infants through school aged.

Parent Requirements:
Single women 25 years of age or older
Married
There is no restriction on family size
There is no upper age restriction
Parents must demonstrate that they can physically and financially care for the child.

Travel:
One parents is required to travel to Sierra Leone to attend the final court hearing. The duration of this trip is 3 days to a week.

The people of Sierra Leone have endured atrocities that have left many homeless and with very little resources. There is a desperate need for families to adopt children from Sierra Leone and to provide care for the children that remain in Sierra Leone. Many children have been abducted and forced to become a child soldier. It is possible that the children have witnessed death and violence, if not been forced to take a part in it as well. Many girls, particularly between the ages of 13-18 have been sold and trafficked to the sex trade. The children lack safety, food, potable water, clothing and medical care. Although some children receive basic education it is certainly not provided for all at this time.

The children of Sierra Leone do need adoptive families, but they need families that have a great understanding of the effects of trauma on a child. They need families that will be redemptive and provide the child with a loving, supportive, and permanent home as they heal from their wounds and grow to be stable and healthy adults.
