Guatemala Confirms Hague Convention Participation
On May 22, 2007 the U.S. Central Authority Department of State announced that the Congress of Guatemala has passed legislation that confirms the country’s membership into the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. Guatemala is now committed to creating standards that will protect children during the adoption process. These standards will include measures to make certain that children being adopted are orphans that they have not been trafficked or sold, and that adoption is in their best interest. Guatemala will be working towards implementing the Convention over the course of this year. It is the hope of many prospective adoptive parents in America that Guatemala does this accurately and swiftly so that an adoptive partnership between American and Guatemala may continue. Guatemala’s commitment to implement the Hague is a solid step in continuing that partnership.
